This song is one of my favorites. I wrote the form 3 years ago; that is chords and melody. I was uncertain if I wanted a solo in it. I added one because I like to wail on the guitar.
Usually I have a first verse that I use to base the whole story around. I wanted a story that was lovely and of course as my stories go, I have tragedy to wrap it all together. In this case my main theme of cheap motels and murder showed its head. I could've made the song into some guy killing a gal, but that didn't appeal to me. I like tough and deadly women in my stories.
The power struggle of a barkeep and her patrons is something I noticed in my life. They pour drinks and the patrons get sloshed. The patrons begin to show their unabridged emotions and sometimes revert to childish behavior or self-righteousness. When people are wasted one can guarantee they will be idiots.
This story is a lone dude looking out for love or a nice night. He most likely gets a nice night before he is killed. At least that's what I imagined.
The guy in this story dies and the barmaid will continue to kill. It's happy ending for her and just an end for him.
IN THE BOX
This song I originally did it as an instrumental. I had the form set in my computer. I removed all the other noises and added live guitar and vocals. I tweaked the drum loops sample and use one hit samples (snare, bass drum, high hat) to recreate the original loop. I mix the drum loop sample with the pieced together drums. I lightly masked the original drum loop.
Barmaid
She was a barmaid in a big city west
She poured them down strong
She's twice divorced and never to return
To any kind of cage
No life could keep her
From the mistakes she took home every night and day
He sat still at end of the bar
Pounding down the gold
He lost his job he didn't know next
Where he was to turn
He saw light brown eyes
And jet black hair of a disaster yet to come
And with the curl of her hand
With the wink of her eye
He's caught, snared in
Pulled underneath the touch of her skin
They danced and sang until the end of the night
She molded men to her name
He was next in line
She asked him where he has been
On those long nights
Of nobody's here or there
Among the fire's heat and light
He had 200 dollars to his name
He was ready for the war
He has nothing to lose and all to win
He was ready to explode
She took him home and made him love
The nape of her neck
And with the curl of her hand
with the wink of her eye
He's caught, snared in
Pulled underneath the touch of her skin
They danced and sang until the end of the night
With a pen-knife in her belt
She stood above him tall
As he slept she plunged down hard
He never woke again
It was a cheap motel
She left cool in the morning sun
She was a barmaid in a big city west
She poured them down strong
She's twice divorced and never to return
To any kind of cage
The venom in her veins
Another man fell for her walk and talk
